Types of Therapy

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is based on the theory that thoughts and behaviours affect how we feel physically and emotionally. This approach helps you to proactively intercept problematic cycles of thinking and behaviour. This is delivered using a variety of techniques, such as thought challenging or behavioural experiments.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a form of psychotherapy derived from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). DBT is most commonly used to treat those with Borderline Personality Disorder. The goal of therapy is to learn to tolerate your emotional distress and change it using DBT skills. Commonly this approach is split into four skills modules: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation and distress tolerance.

What issues might Dialectical Behaviour Therapy be used for?

  • Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
  • Substance Abuse
  • Eating Disorders
  • Depression
  • Suicidal Thoughts / Self Harm

This approach is used to treat problems associated with shame, self-criticism and self-hatred, which can be features of anxiety, depression and strongly associated with childhood trauma. The goal of CFT is to provide you with some tools to manage the emotional distress, looking at how you can think and behave in a way that is compassionate and caring towards your own suffering.

ACT develops psychological flexibility and is a form of behavioural therapy that combines mindfulness skills with the practice of self-acceptance. ACT is essentially about learning to accept what you can’t control, and then recognising and committing to taking the actions that will improve your life and your mood. ACT is effective for a wide range of psychological disorders, and it is also effective as a life-affirming and inspirational perspective of self-determination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at Admin@thlsurrey.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

This session is focused on gaining a shared understanding of your difficulties. Together you and your therapist will consider both current and historical factors that might be contributing to your distress. Together, you will work towards establishing your therapy goals and your therapist will create a bespoke plan for treatment using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

It is common for people to feel nervous and apprehensive about accessing psychological therapy, often wondering if it is necessary or if it will help. If you feel stuck, lost, distressed or even confused, accessing therapy will help you to make sense of what you are feeling and why. Once we understand  your experience, we can work towards implementing change. The focus in therapy is to improve the quality of your life outside of the session.

CBT is an evidence based treatment and has shown to be clinically effective in treating anxiety and depressive disorders.   If after your initial assessment, CBT is not seen to be the most suitable treatment for you, your therapist will endeavour to signpost or refer you onto another service/therapist who will be able to help you.

One of the most important ingredients to good outcomes through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the “fit” between a person and their therapist. If you feel that the connection between you and your therapist isn’t a good fit, you are welcome to have an assessment with another therapist within our team at a reduced cost.

We will always tailor treatment to your individual needs. If having CBT, together (you and your therapist) will draw a visual diagram illustrating what is keeping you stuck within your difficulties. This diagram will reflect how your thoughts and behaviours influence how you feel. Once we have a shared understanding of your difficulty, this diagram will become your map for treatment. Therapy will likely incorporate a combination of ‘talking and doing’. We try to make our sessions as creative and interactive as possible.

Subsequent sessions are 50 minutes Patient choice is very important to us and you will never be pressured into having therapy following your consultation. We will provide you with our expert recommendation based on your assessment and allow you space to think about your options.

Yes, we offer CBT and counselling to children.
